Fire at Wildlife Park

Lemur enclosure destroyed

A fire at the Curraghs Wildlife Park has destroyed the new gentle lemurs enclosure.

The park is closed today as investigations into the blaze continue. Two of the animals were safely recovered from their outdoor area and are unhurt but being checked at the park's hospital unit. Two others are still missing.

The Fire and Rescue Service was called to the park just before midnight and whilst the blaze was quickly extinguished, it was too late to rescue the lemur's enclosure which had only been opened.

It housed four gentle lemurs - a breeding pair and two daughters.

They were part of an captive breeding programme coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria.  Lemurs are a critically endangered species and it is thought there are less than 2,500 of the animals left, primarily in a small region of their native Madagascar.

The park will reopen tomorrow (Friday, 27 April 2018) at 10am as normal.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has apologised for any inconvenience caused and says it appreciates the public’s patience and understanding.
