People can surrender weapons without fear of prosecution

A firearms amnesty has been activated by Manx police and will remain in place until 2 February.

During the period individuals surrendering firearms or weapons will not face prosecution for illegal possession at the point of surrender.

Anyone choosing not to renew a firearms licence is also encouraged to take advantage of the amnesty to surrender unwanted items safely.

Police say the history of each item handed in will be checked, and if it it's believed to have previously been used in a crime, or is subject to current investigation, then prosecution will still be considered.

Weapons can be surrendered at the front counters of police stations in Douglas, Ramsey, Peel and Castletown.

Explosive devices, including grenades must not be brought to police stations under any circumstances.

Anybody in possession of such items should contact police for advice.
