First sitting of Tynwald on 20th

Plenty of reports for Tynwald members to consider

There will be a raft of reports and new schemes for Tynwald members to consider when they meet later this month.

The sitting of the court, from Tuesday, October 20, will be the first of the new parliamentary year.

It will also see the official swearing-in of the two newest members of the house of Keys, Glenfaba MHK Geoffrey Boot and Peel MHK Ray Harmer.

Health and Social Care Minister Howard Quayle will ask Tynwald members to approve a new, five-year strategy for his department and the services it provides.

The Chief Constable's annual report will also be laid before members.

It was released to the public earlier this week and revealed recorded crime had gone up by nine per cent over the previous year.

There are also documents and regulations relating to the Island's flora and fauna for members to consider.

One calls for the Queen Scallop Management Board to be legally recognised, to aid its role to manage the Island's stocks of the shellfish.

There's also a biodiversity strategy, which aims to protect the wide variety of plant and animal life in the Isle of Man.

The Island is committed to having such a plan in place by the end of the year, having signed up the the Convention of Biological Diversity in 2012.

It's a global treaty requiring countries to develop and implement their own biodiversity strategies and action plans.
