School holidays cited as contributory factor
The need for food banks has increased over the summer holidays, according to the Isle of Man Foodbank.
It says demand had risen by more than 50 per cent locally in July and August with 80 parcels handed out this year compared to under 40 in 2016.
Co-ordinator Neal Mellon says holidays can be a very difficult time as children are not receiving free school meals, although he admits the position in the Island is no different than in the UK.
The Trussell Trust, which runs UK food banks, says some are ‘close to crisis’.
