Union says 'we can certainly do a lot better' than just six percent of food being produced locally

The Isle of Man's reliance on imported food was the focus of a petition at the Southern District Agricultural Show this past weekend.

The Manx National Farmers Union says things have to change, after the publication of government figures that show only six percent of food consumed on the Island is produced locally.

MNFU General Secretary, Sarah Comish says that the comparable figure in Jersey is much higher at 20 percent - despite the Channel Island having considerably less capacity.

She says that picture needs to drastically change:

The union confirmed the petition will also be available to sign at the Royal Manx Agricultural Show later this summer and is expected to be available online.

Manx Radio has contacted the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture for a response.
