Food won't be short in no-deal scenario - Quayle

Shortage in choice of fresh produce possible, though

Islanders may see a reduction in the choice of fresh produce available - but there will be no shortage of food available in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

That's according to Chief Minister Howard Quayle.

In response to a written question from Ramsey MHK, Lawrie Hooper, Mr Quayle said government has been working closely with major food suppliers on the Island, who have their own contingency plans in place.

He states that the degree of assurance which has been given by them is 'high'.

Mr Hooper wanted to know the specifics of contingency plans in place and if Mr Quayle would publish the paper on the issue which was presented to CoMin in March.

In his reply Mr Quayle suggests the UK government has concluded the most effective response to potential disruption in the supply of food must be industry-led, with government supporting and enabling their response.

However, he says the paper presented to ministers in March contains information provided by retailers on a confidential basis and therefore cannot be published.
