Four anaesthetists from Noble's Hospital facing manslaughter charge

James Joseph Shimmin died on 4 February 2021

Douglas man died after routine operation

Four anaesthetists from Noble's Hospital have been reported for the offence of committing manslaughter by gross negligence.

It follows a police investigation which was sparked after the death of a 55-year-old man from Douglas.

James Joseph Shimmin died on 4 February this year after undergoing a routine operation.

Police have confirmed the medical practitioners – one anaesthetist and three consultant anaesthetists – who are employed by Manx Care will go to court next year.

An investigation – involving a medical specialist based in the UK and independent UK legal advisors – led to the decision to report the individuals for summons.

Evidence will be submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers and an initial court date will be determined for some time in early 2022.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Newey said: "This matter not only has a significant impact on the anaesthetists involved but also the widow of James and his family and friends.

"I would respectfully request that their privacy is respected at this time and speculation as to what has occurred, including social media comments, are refrained from as this is the very early stages of a criminal process after which there will be the coronial process."

Detective Chief Inspector Newey spoke to Manx Radio:

Manx Radio has contacted Manx Care for comment.
