Four from the Island named in New Year Honours List

They're among first under reign of King Charles

Four people from the Isle of Man have been named in the King's New Year Honours List.

They are among the first to be recognised during the reign of King Charles.

Two retired head teachers have been made Members of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Sue Moore, the former head teacher of Queen Elizabeth II High School in Peel has received an MBE for exceptional services to and Leadership in Education on the Isle of Man.

She navigated the school through good and challenging times, with the aim of putting the students first, and creating a structured career path for teachers and support staff.

Ms Moore retired in August.

Speaking to Manx Radio she says it's not just an award for her, but all those who've supported her over the years:

Adrienne Burnett is also being awarded an MBE for outstanding Services to Education, Arts and Culture.

Mrs Burnett recently retired as the head teacher of Ballakermeen High School.

During her career, she formed a 'School Improvement Plan’ which led to the development of the school’s Sixth Form Centre. In the past five years, it has achieved the leading A-Level grades across the Island and over the past two years has had seven Oxbridge acceptances, a record for any Manx school.

Mrs Burnett also led the design and build of the ‘Studio Theatre’, which has helped develop a Performing Arts department.

Meanwhile, Andrew Scarffe is being recognised with a British Empire Medal (BEM) for his service to the Preservation of Laxey and Lonan Heritage and the Island's railways.

As a technical support officer for the Department of Infrastructure, Mr Scarffe’s enthusiasm, commitment and dedication has enabled his team to restore a number of historic electric trams and trailers from the Island’s renowned heritage tram fleet.

He is also an historical author who has written a number of works to commemorate and celebrate various aspects of the Island’s history.

Mr Scarffe also leads guided walks throughout Laxey and Lonan and regularly gives talks to visitors and special interest groups that visit the Island.

He says he is very proud:

Carey Chung, who has served the last five Lieutenant Governors of the Island, has been appointed Member of the Royal Victorian Order for her exceptional service.

In her role as the Manager of Government House, Miss Chung has been responsible for overseeing the house staff and running all events that take place there, including multiple annual receptions and investitures.

In 2022, more than 3,500 guests were hosted at Government House, including representatives from more than 70 countries.

Miss Chung has been involved in over 12 Royal visits to the Island, with the most recent visit being that of HRH The Princess Royal in 2021.

Speaking to Manx Radio Miss Chung says she receiving the honour is a huge privilege:

Meanwhile, His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor has awarded a Governor's Commendation to Tony Howell for "his long and dedicated service to popular music" on the Isle of Man.

Mr Howell is widely known on the Island as ‘Flash’.

He has been a key figure on the Island’s music scene for over sixty years, and has played in numerous groups including The Cheetahs, Black Mass, Whiskey Mac and the Hunters.

Mr Howell will receive his honour from the Lieutenant Governor in the coming days.
