UK watchdog claims around half are unsafe
Consumers should make their own decisions on whether to keep potentially dangerous fridge freezers, says the Island's chief inspector of trading standards.
A report by Which?, a UK standards watchdog, has called for all 'plastic-backed fridges to be urgently removed from sale', after an investigation revealed almost half of popular models are unsafe.
John Peet from the Office of Fair Trading admits the report is worrying, but insists officially the appliances do pass existing safety tests.
He says the issue has been complicated by a lack of funding for organisations which monitor and regulate trading standards:
