Gallantry medal for Port St Mary RNLI crew member after dramatic rescue

Nine volunteers have also been commended for saving three lives

Port St Mary lifeboat crew have been recognised for their part in a dramatic rescue which saw three people rescued off a stricken yacht.

On 6 November last year, both of the station's lifeboats were called to assist the vessel which was caught, near rocks, in very challenging conditions.

A Bronze Medal has been awarded to the helm of the crew, Richard Leigh, for his boat handling, seamanship and courage during the rescue.

This is the first time a gallantry medal has been awarded to Port St Mary RNLI.

Nine letters of thanks have also been presented to the volunteer crew for helping to rescue three people whose lives were in danger when the yacht's propeller became entangled.

They are: Chris Hill, Daniel Grace, Mike Keggen, Sarah Keggen, Gareth Watt, Brian Kelly, Mark Pendlebury, Laura Cordner and Robert Marshall.

The letters will reflect their individual courage, collective teamwork, and determination to save a life.
