Garff MHK won't contest his seat in September's General Election

Andrew Smith says his decision has been led by recent health news

A Garff MHK has announced they're not planning to contest their seat in September's General Election.

Andrew Smith was first elected to the constituency in 2021.

He says, while he'd had every intention of standing again, some news about his health could affect what he describes as the 'significant dedication, commitment and loyalty' needed to be an MHK.

In a statement, Andrew says: "At age 72, following 56 years, 40 years of which on the Isle of Man, of continuous employment with no illness, I have voluntarily undergone a significant health screening process. 

"Although nothing serious has been identified, there are some issues that could affect the significant dedication, commitment and loyalty required of me as an MHK to continue to adequately serve my constituents and community honourably and responsibly and with the level of dedication required."

There are currently seven candidates hoping to represent Garff in the House of Keys - Anthony Allen, Sean Bostrom, Daphne Caine, Aishlinn Creer, Vicki Hewison, Peter Kermeen and Martyn Perkins.

The General Election is taking place on Thursday 24 September.
