Government adopts definition of antisemitism

Chief minister will take part in 'Candle in the Window' this evening

The Isle of Man Government hopes formally adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism will help foster inclusive communities across the Island.

The Council of Ministers' announcement comes on Holocaust Memorial Day, and recognises antisemitism as a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred towards Jews.

The IHRA goes on to state "Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."

CoMin says this definition is intended to help ensure people can speak freely when addressing harmful or discriminatory language should it arise, and adopting it reflects the Island's practice of aligning with the UK's foreign policy and government approach.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan will be among those lighting a candle in his window at 8pm to remember those who died in the Holocaust and other genocides.
