Government issues warning after remains of fire found in South Barrule

'Woodland areas like this are especially hazardous right now'

People are being reminded to take extreme care during the current dry spell, and to avoid lighting fires in the countryside.

The warning comes following the discovery of fire remains within a closed area of South Barrule, which is currently off limits due to windblown trees and dangerous conditions.

In a post on social media, a government spokesperson said: "Lighting a fire here isn’t just reckless — it puts lives at risk and threatens our environment.

"The combination of dry ground, unpredictable winds, and unstable trees makes woodland areas like this especially hazardous right now."

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Service is reiterating a similar message.

In its own post, it said: "We hope you make the most of this great weather we are having, if you plan to head out and enjoy our wonderful island...please don't be that person that starts a wildfire."

They are advising people to:

  • Never throw cigarette ends out of a car window
  • Do not leave fires or BBQs unattended. Make sure that they are fully extinguished after use.
  • Don’t leave bottles or glass. Sunlight shining through glass can start a fire. Take them home or better yet put them in a recycling bin.
