Protest against revised emission reduction date

Government has been accused of 'kicking the can down the road' on climate change after putting forward new targets for reducing emissions.

Today Tynwald will be asked to approve an interim greenhouse gas reduction target of 45 per cent by 2035.

That’s despite a recent public consultation which showed 51 per cent per cent of respondents were in favour of reaching the interim goal by 2030.

Andrew Langan-Newton is the leader of the Isle of Man Green Party and is angry that another five years has been added to the target:

Paul Weatherall is the chairman of the Liberal Vannin Party which says it’s noted the move with ‘dismay’.

He’s calling on MHKs to amend the date back to 2030:

The Isle of Man branch of Extinction Rebellion has branded the changed target a ‘disgusting betrayal’.

Protestors from the group will gather outside the Tynwald building from 10am today to vocalise their opposition - Jordan McCarthy is a spokesperson for the group:

We've tried to contact the Head of the Climate Change Board for a response, but so far haven't heard back.

Government's consultation - which was conducted between 25 January and 21 February - attracted 611 responses.
