Gov't considering ban on smartphones for under-16s in schools

But the Department of Education, Sport and Culture wants to hear your views first

Schools could be told to ban smartphones for under-16s, as part of a series of reforms to the education system.

Government is considering the move, but is running a public consultation on a number of academic related issues.

Students at one of the Isle of Man's high schools recently told Manx Radio they believe social media is 'dangerous' and is the cause of many 'insecurities' being faced by teenagers.

Education Minister Daphne Caine says as a society, it's an aspect that has to be discussed:

The following areas are under review as part of proposed changes to the law:

  • Additional Educational Needs
  • Education Tribunals
  • Emergency Closure of Schools
  • Religious Education
  • Governing Bodies
  • Home Education
  • Admissions and Catchment
  • Children who are Looked After
