Hopes DoI can work with commissioners to solve public toilet issue

Chris Thomas responds to local authority

Infrastructure Minister Chris Thomas says he hopes the commissioners and his department can work together to solve the public toilet issue.

In response to Castletown Commissioners statements about the potential closure of toilets Mr Thomas said ‘perhaps one solution they might want to take forward is purchasing these toilets’.

Minister Thomas also said the toilets are not necessary for ‘harbour users’ and providing public toilets is not the ‘core business’ for harbours.

The local authority has previously offered to clean the toilets if they were refurbished by the Department of Infrastructure however the department says it will not do this because they are not a ‘required facility’ and therefore has ‘no other option but to close them’.

The facilities, which are located on Back Hope Street, are owned by the DoI but were leased out to the local authority which undertakes cleaning and minor maintenance.
