Householders prompted to increase home security

Island residents have been reviewing their home security in the wake of the recent spate of burglaries.

Police say there have now been 36 incidents in the past few weeks

Yesterday, two burglaries were reported – a householder foiled would-be thieves in Vicarage Park in Douglas, while a break-in at Ballamilligan in Braddan netted a haul of cash and jewellery.

Inspector Derek Flint says they're working with the victims and progressing a number of lines of inquiry.

He adds that whilst there is a lot of understandable public concern over the burglaries, the chances of becoming a victim remain very small and are being further diminished by people becoming more security conscious, locking doors and windows, even when they're in the house, and removing keys from the inside of doors.

Neighbourhood vigilance is also much increased.

Shoppers on Strand Street today told Manx Radio how they are reacting to the mounting number of unsolved burglaries around the Island
