'I wouldn't mind if Manx Gas collapses' says OFT chair

Douglas North MHK hits out after year of significant rises

The chair of the Office of Fair Trading has hit out at the Island's gas supplier saying he wouldn't mind if the company 'collapses'.

John Wannenburgh took aim at Manx Gas in light of significant price rises over the past year.

A further 43.9 per cent rise will come in next week (1 September).

Mr Wannenburgh is also the MHK for Douglas North:

In response Manx Gas Managing Director Aidan Baglow said: "These comments are extraordinarily negative and unhelpful which is disappointing to hear from an elected representative, especially at this sensitive time.

"Manx Gas has been an integral part of the Island's infrastructure since 1836; we employ nearly 90 members of staff who do their very best for our customers on a daily basis.

"All of us are working extremely hard to protect our customers as best we can from the impact of the volatility of the global energy market.

"We want to be the Isle of Man’s long-term trusted partner in energy management; working closely with Isle of Man Government and the Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority is a key part of our strategy, and is essential to managing prices during the energy crisis."
