Inquest into fatal crash opens

Four killed last Monday

An inquest into the deaths of four neighbours in a car crash in Laxey has opened at Douglas Courthouse.

The accident claimed the lives of husband and wife, Derek and Joyce Brown, and their friends Kathleen Garrett and Marie Gordon.

They suffered fatal injuries when their car hit a bus stop.

All lived in the same street in the village.

Mr and Mrs Brown, 89 and 81, Mrs Garrett, 84, and Mrs Gordon, 81, were neighbours on Gretch Noa Road.

The accident happened on the A2 at Pinfold Hill in Laxey on the morning of 24 July.

The inquest this morning heard Mr Brown - who was at the wheel - had suffered a cardiac arrest due to his injuries.

Both he and Mrs Garrett were given CPR, but died at the scene.

Mrs Gordon died later that day in hospital, and Mrs Brown lost her fight for life the following day.

Coroner of Inquests John Needham passed his condolences to their families.

Proceedings have been adjourned to a date to be fixed.
