Parkinson's sufferer took his own life

Poignant case unfolds at inquest

An inquest has heard how a Ramsey man took his own life after suffering from Parkinson's disease for 14 years.

Coroner John Needham reconvened the inquest into the death of 80-year old Derek Beavers at Douglas courthouse today (10 May).

Mr Beavers, a retired company director from Fairway Drive, drowned in Ramsey inner harbour on 10 November 2016.

The hearing was told Mr Beavers left his home that morning for a walk on his own, which was not unusual. The alarm was raised when he didn't return.

Footage gathered from CCTV cameras traced his journey through the town and across the swing bridge. At just after 8am, he walked down steps on the harbour wall and entered the water.

His body was discovered three hours later, at half-tide.

A long-time sufferer of Parkinson's he had hoped to benefit from a pioneering therapy in the UK several years ago, but this hadn't been possible. He had subsequently been diagnosed with dementia.

Statements given by his wife and son, read in court, said Mr Beavers had spoken of going to an assisted dying clinic Switzerland.

Shortly before his death however, he appeared to be in better spirits.

The coroner concluded Mr Beavers, who was described as independent and strong-willed, had intended to end his life, and the tragedy was neither a cry for help nor an accident.

Tributes to Derek Beavers as a sociable, generous and articulate man were read out at the inquest.

Mrs Beavers thanked all who attended to her husband on the day, and those involved in the investigation for their professionalism.

John Needham recorded a verdict of suicide and offered sincere condolences to the family.
