Intensive work to ‘properly challenge’ violent offenders to start in March

Prison and Probation Service introducing new interventions for inmates

Intensive work to ‘properly challenge’ offenders who commit violent crime on the Isle of Man will start next month.

The Prison and Probation Service says it wants to target the types of offending that cause the most harm to society.

New interventions will be introduced with the service working closely with a forensic psychology team.

Declan Crawley is Head of Community Rehabilitation:

Some of those targeted through this work will be ‘lifers’ – prisoners who receive a life sentence but who are approaching the point of being granted parole.

The release of inmates like this – who are held in UK prisons - has been something we’ve covered in-detail on Manx Radio recently after speaking to the victims of their offending.

The Department of Home Affairs claims that bringing ‘lifers’ back to the Isle of Man means it has ‘total control’ in protecting both those who were targeted and the wider public.

Dan Davies is the chief officer:

The DHA says it accepts that better communication is needed with the victims of crime going into 2023.

Mr Davies, and Justice and Home Affairs Minister Jane Poole-Wilson, have been giving evidence to the Social Affairs Policy Review Committee:
