Island has higher dependency ratio than the EU

Sixty four non-working age to every hundred workers

It's been confirmed the Island has one of the highest dependency ratios in the western world.

Figures show that for every hundred people of working age, there are 64 people under sixteen and over retirement age.

That's based on data from the latest census figures, and places the Island higher than the UK, other Crown Dependencies and the EU average.

The dependency ratio is defined as the percentage of the non-working age population against the working age population - and in the Isle of Man it's quite high, at least in comparison to our immediate neighbours. For every 100 people in the working age category in the UK there are 56 in the opposite bracket, in Guernsey it's 54, in Jersey 50, and the average for all EU members is 55.

Here on the Island's it's 64.

The ratio does however have limitations as a tool for analysis, as countries have different retirement ages, and many continue to work in their later years.

And of those defined as the 'working population', not all have jobs - these are all factors which aren't considered when calculating this measure.
