Island prepares to mark 75th anniversary of VE Day

Two-minute silence will be observed across the British Isles

The Isle of Man will fall silent this morning (Friday, 8 May), as we remember the sacrifices that led to victory in Europe during World War II.

A two-minute silence is being held at 11am, in line with the United Kingdom, to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle will then deliver a commemorative statement on behalf of government, and the Island - this will be at midday and will be broadcast on Manx Radio.

‘The Last Post’, ‘Battle’s O’er’ and 'VE Day 75’ will be played from the summit of Snaefell, by a bugler and piper, as well as from the highest peaks in the UK and at hundreds of other locations worldwide.

Government says its plans for commemoration have had to change in light of Covid-19 restrictions, and there are no gatherings arranged.

Manx Radio is already aware of planned celebrations - including street parties in Onchan - those wishing to observe the occasion should do so privately, and are reminded to adhere to social distancing rules.

Manx National Heritage, Culture Vannin and the Department of Education, Sport and Culture have produced a range of educational resources and ways to mark the anniversary from home - for all ages.

Finally, there’s a set of commemorative 50p coins and a Gold Sovereign being issued.
