Island to mark Commonwealth Day

Two students to represent IoM in special service

Two young Islanders will represent the Island as Douglas joins other communities across the Commonwealth this morning (Monday) to mark Commonwealth Day.

Mayor Sara Hackman will raise the flag in the garden adjacent to Douglas Town Hall at 10 o’clock.

This year’s theme is ‘An Inclusive Commonwealth’ to celebrate diversity.

Mayor Hackman will be joined by members of the council and senior officers, and will then read the affirmation which articulates the commitment of member nations.

Two students will represent the Isle of Man at an event in London on behalf of the local branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

Onchan residents and former Ballakermeen students Nicholas Hawkes and Alexander Price will join around 1000 other young people at a service in Westminster Abbey and a reception with the Queen at Marlborough House.

The pair were chosen following a competition to write 100 words on how the Island might benefit from their attendance.
