Islanders could still face huge mobile bills

EU charges for mobile usage won't be waived for Islanders

The head of the Island’s Communications Commission admits the body can’t do much to prevent locals being hit by data roaming charges while on holiday in Europe.

From June next year, extra costs of using a mobile phone in countries across the EU will be scrapped.

It follows years of negotiations between EU officials and mobile phone operators.

However, the charges won’t be waived for Islanders who would face huge bills when downloading films or other data during their holidays.

Juan Watterson is urging telecom providers to talk to their UK counterparts.
