Isle of Man Energy reassures customers following Jersey tragedy

Cause of the incident is yet to be determined

Isle of Man Energy wants to reassure customers that its Island network is safe, following a suspected gas explosion in Jersey.

The blast tore through a block of flats in St Helier in the early hours of Saturday morning (10 December).

In a statement, Isle of Man Energy said: "We are deeply saddened by the events that have occurred in Jersey and our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives and who have been affected. The cause of the tragic incident is yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing.

"We would like to reassure our customers and the wider public that our network is safe: we have rigorous and robust procedures in place to ensure we operate in accordance with industry standards. Our engineering teams operate 24 hours a day to ensure we provide a safe and secure supply of gas for everyone.

"If you smell gas, or think you smell gas, please call the freephone gas emergency number 24 hours a day on 0808 1624 444 and one of our engineers will attend within the hour to investigate."

Seven people are now known to have died following the incident.

Two people are still missing.

Yesterday, a one-minute silence was held across the island to remember those who've lost their lives.
