Isle of Man watches Westminster debate

UK Foreign Office Minister Sir Alan Duncan

Mann to be excluded from new measures?

The British Government will not oppose a move to force overseas territories to have greater financial transparency.

It means places like the Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands will be required to introduce a register revealing the beneficial owners of assets held in the jurisdiction.

The move is designed to try and stave off a potential defeat for the government just two days before the local elections.

Foreign Office Minister Sir Alan Duncan made the concession but asked for the crown dependencies, including the Isle of Man, to be excluded from the new measures.

The debate in the House of Commons continues with calls from some members for the crown dependencies to be included in the bill.
