Item left on hob sparks emergency call

Flat block in Rosemount evacuated

An item left on an electric hob led to firefighters being called out in the early hours of this morning (Sunday).

A crew with two fire engines was dispatched to a flat on Rosemount in Douglas at around 1.30am.

The resident was woken by the fire alarm and found the flat beginning to fill with smoke.

Occupants evacuated the block due to the strong smell of smoke.

Crews found the fire had been caused by a plastic drawer left on top of a switched on hob.

The plastic had melted but had not yet developed into flame.

The fire service is reminding people it’s bad practice to leave anything sitting on a hob as they can get switched on by mistake.
