Large scale public search for missing man 'not requested' yet say police

Officers using 'huge amount' of resource to find 81-year-old

Police searching for a missing 81-year-old say a large scale public search, over open ground, ‘is not requested’ at this time.

David Lee, from Douglas, was reported missing yesterday (15 July) – he was seen on CCTV getting off a bus in Foxdale on Thursday (14 July).

Officers have spent two days searching for him assisted by a ‘huge amount’ of resource including the fire service, coastguard, civil defence and a range of partner agencies.

Drones, search dogs, a helicopter and a light aircraft have been used to aid efforts which have focused today (16 July) around the South Barrule Plantation.

In a statement the Isle of Man Constabulary said: “We know people want to help and we are asking people to look out for him if they have properties, vehicles or land in the area but a large search with the public over open ground is not requested at this time.

“We are not sure of the exact area where we would do that and it would involve resources we have on other tasks at this time and we are trying a range of other options.

“We all want to find him ASAP. We will keep you updated and if we need public volunteers will get info out ASAP. Thanks for all your help so far.”

Officers have also reiterated calls for people who saw Mr Lee on the A36 route – between Coffee Cottage and the Round Table crossroads – to contact them.
