Man admits anti-depressant charges

Post Office intercepted 100 illegal pills

A man who had a package of 100 illegal anti-depressants intercepted by the Post Office tried again just days later, a court’s heard.

Twenty-eight-year-old Paul James Beattie, of Harbour Road, has appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of being concerned in supplying class C drugs, as well as one of cannabis possession.

Prosecutor Roger Kane said post office staff alerted police after finding a package of 100 Diazepam tablets on 12 December.

Another package intended for Beattie was intercepted on 24 December.

Police officers then also discovered 10g of cannabis when they arrested him.

Beattie’s advocate said he’d asked a friend in the UK to mail the tablets, which he used for pain relief, after his doctor stopped prescribing them.

Mrs Hughes imposed a combination order, and Beattie will spend 12 months on probation as well as doing 100 hours of community service.

He was also ordered to pay £125 costs.
