Man broke victim's ankle in 16-man street brawl

Guilty plea for assault outside Nag's Head pub

A Douglas man will be sentenced in October after breaking a man's ankle in a brawl outside a bar.

Twenty-three-year-old Wiktor Andrzej Budzinski of Princes Avenue appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm on 17 July in an incident outside the Nag's Head pub on Victoria Street.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court police had been called to reports of a fight involving up to 16 men near Bordello nightclub at around 4am.

As they responded, officers spotted Budzinski astride his victim, who was lying on the ground outside the pub.

CCTV caught the moment Budzinski grappled with the man, putting him into a headlock and throwing him onto the ground – the man broke his ankle as he fell off the kerb into the road.

When arrested, Budzinski gave a false name to police, but he was later correctly identified when his fingerprints were taken and a computer matched them to his real name.

He was bailed in the sum of £500 while probation reports are prepared, and will appear for sentencing on 6 October.
