Man caught with Class A days after being released from prison

56-year-old was caught with MDMA whilst on licence

A convicted drug trafficker who was caught with ecstasy just days after being released from prison has been ordered to carry out unpaid work.

Liam Patrick Flanagan, of Ballafletcher Road, appeared at Douglas Courthouse where he admitted possessing the Class A substance.

Police were called to Tromode House on 13 December last year; the 56-year-old was searched and officers found two MDMA tablets and some white powder.

The drugs were estimated to have a street value of £30.

Magistrates heard Flanagan had been sentenced to more than 10 years in prison in 2017 after attempting to import heroin to the Isle of Man.

He’d been released on licence, after serving six-and-a-half-years, just days before committing the new offence with the advocate describing his offending as a ‘blip’.

Asking Magistrates to give him a chance she told them: “He has made a significant error of judgement. He put at risk all of his good, hard work.”

Ordering Flanagan to do 60 hours of community service the bench told him: “Its’ very disappointing to see you back in court so soon after a long spell in prison.

“I hope we don’t see you back here again.”

“You won’t see me,” Flanagan responded: “I swear on the next door neighbour’s dead dog! Thank you for giving me a chance. I’d like to apologise for wasting everyone’s time.”

Flanagan was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £50.
