Man jailed for spitting at police officer

Ban from licensed premises

A Castletown man who spat at a police officer has been jailed.

Thirty-six-year-old Michael John Kewley, of Malew Road, was sentenced to eight months in prison by Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes when he appeared before her yesterday.

Kewley had been charged with assaulting the officer and resisting peace officers in the execution of their duty, as well as being drunk and disorderly.

The charges related to an incident outside the British pub on North Quay in Douglas on 23 December last year.

The court heard Kewley had called police after he had been attacked, suffering a significant facial injury.

He ended up being abusive towards them, then struggled with them as they tried to restrain him, spitting in one officer's face in the process.

His advocate said Kewley had been working hard to address mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, had also been working with the Drug and Alcohol Team and had been making progress.

He asked for a non-custodial sentence.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said Kewley had a string of similar convictions dating back to 2001, though, which had been dealt with in such ways in the past.

In addition to jailing Kewley, she banned him from licensed premises and from buying alcohol for nine months.
