Man seen carrying axe denies offensive weapon charge

Follows early morning call to house in Douglas

A court has heard a Douglas resident who opened the door to an early morning caller found another man carrying an axe.

Thirty-nine-year-old David Mark Priestnal, of Darragh Way in Douglas, appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse.

He pleaded not guilty to a single charge of carrying an offensive weapon.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing the man, living on Anagh Coar Road, was woken up in the early hours of 5 June.

The man answered the door and Mr Priestnal, who was said to smell of alcohol, told him he'd tracked down his missing phone to that address.

When he told him he didn't have his phone Mr Priestnal walked away, swinging a hatchet, and was later heard yelling "where's my Samsung?"

When police arrived they watched him hide an axe under a car – Mr Priestnal later explained he'd found it and was hiding it for the sake of child safety.

He was bailed in the sum of £500 to appear on 26 August for a pre-trial review.
