Man sent to prison after a 'string of crimes'

24-year-old headbutted police officer after arrest

A man who committed a string of crimes while on probation and subject to a community service order has been sent to prison.

Twenty-four-year-old Liam Luke Kaighin of Marathon Road in Douglas appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse via a live video link from the Island’s prison.

He pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer with intent to resist arrest, possessing heroin, cocaine and cannabis, using threatening behaviour, and criminal damage.

Prosecution advocate Hazel Carroon told the hearing all the offences related to four incidents which took place between April and December 2020.

While staying at Tromode House in Douglas, Kaighin accused a man of being a paedophile, and staff had to call police to calm the situation.

Later, Kaighin drunkenly and falsely accused a stranger of stealing his phone and punched the man in the back before fleeing the area.

The hearing was told he'd also headbutted a police officer and deliberately flooded a cell at police headquarters after he was arrested.

Mrs Hughes revoked both his community service and probation orders, and jailed Kaighin for a total of eight months.
