Man to be sentenced next month for police officer assault

Cannabis possession also admitted

A Peel man will be sentenced in October after assaulting a police officer who arrested him on suspicion of cycling while drunk.

Thirty-five-year-old Lee John Smith, of Elm Drive, pleaded guilty to two charges when he appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas courthouse.

He admitted possessing a small amount of cannabis bush and assaulting a police officer with intent to resist arrest.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon withdrew one count of cycling whilst unfit because of drugs and one of obstructing a drugs search.

The court heard police officers spotted Smith as he was cycling with no lights on at around 11.30pm on 25 July on Ballafesson Road in Port Erin.

When they tried to stop him, he got off his bike and ran away before later being found at Rowany Golf Club – police also discovered a backpack he’d abandoned containing three wraps of cannabis.

Mrs Hughes heard Smith still has to complete 80 hours of a community service order imposed last May.

She granted bail in the sum of £500 while presentencing reports are prepared and he’ll appear in court again on 8 October.
