Man tries to smash into neighbours flat with fire extinguisher

Occupants barricaded flat in terror

A court’s heard the terrified occupants of a flat barricaded themselves in their home and called police to report their neighbour was trying to smash his way in with a fire extinguisher.

Fifty-year-old Neal Anthony Clague appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse, where he admitted one count each of criminal damage and using provoking behaviour.

Clague, of Strand Street in Douglas, used to live in a flat in Duke Street – and the court heard it was in that building a smouldering feud bubbled over.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing the neighbouring family called police just after 2am on 16 April, saying Clague had shouted death threats and was using an extinguisher to batter down their door.

As Clague continued to damage the front door and shout abuse, they feared he’d manage to get into the hallway and retreated to another room to barricade themselves in.

When police arrived Clague had already given up and returned to his flat, but officers had to force their way in when he refused to open his door.

Clague’s advocate Paul Glover told the hearing his client saw red and the incident was the result of a long-running feud.

He was fined a total of £800, and magistrates also ordered him to pay compensation of £400 as well as £125 towards prosecution costs.
