Man walks free after threatening to kill nurse

Time spent on remand covers sentence

An Onchan cleaner threatened to kill a nurse from the UK who was helping at Noble’s Hospital during the coronavirus pandemic, a court’s heard.

Thirty-five-year-old Ryan Reid of Eskdale Road appeared before magistrates at Douglas courthouse via a live video link from prison in Jurby.

At a previous hearing, he'd admitted one count each of using provoking behaviour and criminal damage.

Prosecution advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the hearing on May 17 Reid had been staying at the Ellan Vannin Hotel in Douglas, which was housing NHS staff.

At around 7pm, a nurse in a nearby room made a noise complaint because Reid was drunk and playing loud music.

He responded by banging on her door screaming obscenities and threatening to kill her, before swearing at and menacing the manager and his son.

After being asked to leave, he began smashing things inside his room until police arrived and arrested him.

Magistrates sent him to prison for 14 days, but Reid walked free after the hearing because he'd spent 21 days in jail on remand.

He was also ordered to pay £125 towards prosecution costs and £60 compensation to the hotel for the damage he'd done.
