Manx Care urges residents to 'choose well' when seeking medical attention

Health service expecting to see rise in people accessing help within already in-demand climate

Manx Care is urging residents to 'choose well' when seeking medical attention.

The health service is expecting to see increased demand over the Christmas period at a time when services, like the Emergency Department, are already seeing long waiting times.

Noble's Hospital was operating at OPEL Level 4 at the weekend, meaning it was under extreme pressure, but has since de-escalated to OPEL 3.

Manx Radio's Christian Jones went to Noble's Hospital to speak to Director of Nursing Paul Moore:

Meanwhile Public Health Isle of Man has sent a letter to parents through schools highlighting the signs of Strep-A.

The letter asks parents to keep children displaying symptoms of scarlet fever at home and contact their GP.

Symptoms to be aware of include sore throat, headache, fever, nausea and vomiting.

The illness can also lead to a fine red rash and some children may have a flushed face.

But how much of a concern is Strep-A, and should we be taking precautions?

John Snelling is the Associate Director of Primary and Community Care:

The health service is asking residents to consider self and community care options before approaching Noble's and the Emergency Department including:

  • Minor Injuries Unit at Ramsey Cottage Hospital
  • GP surgeries
  • MEDS (Manx emergency doctor service)
  • Community dental service
  • MECS (Minor eye conditions service)
  • Mental health crisis team
  • Community pharmacies
