Manx horses given all clear after strangles outbreak

Equestrian Isle of Man provides update

Horses on the Island have been given the all clear by Equestrian Isle of Man.

It follows an outbreak of strangles last year, a contagious infection that leaves horses with difficulty breathing and swallowing.

On social media, Equestrian IOM has confirmed ten out of eleven infected horses are now completely clear.

The outbreak came down to a horse named Dusty who isn't infectious at the moment but is in isolation until the vets and labs are all back to normal after festive closures.

Then, she'll be treated with an endoscopy and as many guttural pouch washouts as it takes to remove all of the bacteria.

The remaining 5 horses on the premises have remained successfully isolated on the other side of the farm with completely separate access throughout and have displayed no signs of poor health whatsoever but will be blood tested all the same for peace of mind.

All the horses got brand new head collars, hay nets and brushes for Christmas so the team is ready for a healthy and happy 2020.
