Manx pharmacies feeling impact of common drug shortages

Community pharmacist discusses issues facing sector

Some medication is in short supply at pharmacies across the Isle of Man.

That’s the view of one community pharmacist who says the Island is experiencing issues with commonly requested items including blood pressure and osteoporosis medication.

It’s a similar story in the UK too – the issues have been put down to a number of factors including the sourcing of raw materials and factory closures due to Covid.

'Truly, pharmacy staff are working extremely hard to make sure the public has its continuity of treatment'. Edwin Kinrade

Edwin Kinrade, from Kinrade’s Pharmacy in Douglas, says it’s something that’s been getting worse over the last two years and pharmacists could end up footing the bill:

In a statement Manx Care said: "The UK is experiencing intermittent national shortage of some drugs.

"Local pharmacy teams work together to reduce any shortages by exchanging stocks for those pharmacies that cannot obtain them.

"Pharmacists also work with GPs if shortages are going to be longer term.

"Manx Care are reassuring the public they are continually monitoring the situation."
