Manx police recruitment process 'exceeds that of UK' 

Follows damning report into officers in England and Wales

The Isle of Man Constabulary says its recruitment and vetting process is rigorous, and exceeds those seen in the UK.

It comes as a report has revealed potentially hundreds of police officers working in England and Wales should have failed checks.

Manx police say people will be 'rightly shocked' by the findings across.

It insists, however, small jurisdictions have an advantage in this regard and the constabulary, for over a decade, has taken a unique approach to recruitment.

It says it selects new officers 'on the values they have, and using a mixture of police officers of all ranks and members of the community as assessors.' 

The UK report, commissioned following the murder of Sarah Everard in March 2021, found issues with misogyny and sexual misconduct.

It also found some officers were employed despite convictions of domestic abuse and sexual assault.
