Manx public thanked for 'huge' response to Ukrainian crisis

Three wagons full of supplies will leave the Island tonight

Three wagons full of supplies destined for the people of Ukraine will leave the Isle of Man this evening.

Everything onboard has been collected by the Manx public in response to the ongoing invasion of the country led by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

War broke out in Ukraine more than a week ago – since then the United Nations Refugee Agency estimates that over one million people have fled into neighbouring countries.

Local group Manx Support Refugees has coordinated the appeal for aid for those people who have been forced to leave their homes.

Collection points around the Island were set up and goods – including clothing, blankets, toiletries, medical supplies and baby products – were donated by members of the public.

It was so popular that the group had to ask people to stop donating because it had run out of space.

Zoe Thompson helped lead the appeal – she told Tessa Hawley it's been overwhelming:

The wagons will travel to Wrexham and then leave in convoy on Friday where they will head to the Ukrainian border with Poland.

The group is now urging people who want to continue supporting the crisis to donate money to charities working on the ground in Europe instead.

Yesterday the Disasters Emergency Committee launched a humanitarian appeal which the Isle of Man Government donated £500,000 to.
