Manxonia House discussions continue

Valuations required before further talks

Port St Mary Commissioners have agreed to seek a valuation for a building recently acquired by the authority.

During its annual general meeting on Wednesday, the board voted to defer discussion on the possible sale of Manxonia House, until three estate agents have been asked to offer a price for the site.

Newly elected chair Dr Michelle Heywood supported the move, along with three of the eight members present.

Extensive repairs of the building have been undertaken by the commissioners, but questions remain over its future use.

The board announced a 5.2 per cent rate increase this year, which some commissioners and ratepayers have suggested is linked to the purchase of Manxonia.

During the meeting, commissioner Rob Hirst, who put forward the motion suggesting it be sold, said the public want to know what plans there are for the building.

Board member Alec Merchant said "imaginative use of the building could be profitable in the long term for the ratepayers, and selling it would be short-sighted".

The board will discuss the issue again at its next meeting on 23 May.
