Eateries closing on several days due to lack of staff
There's a 'massive chef shortage' on the Isle of Man, according to the chairman of the Jaks group.
Earlier this week, the company announced its Douglas eatery will stop serving food during lunchtimes from Monday to Thursday and the Ramsey branch will close two days a week.
Andrew Gibbs told Manx Radio the company has lost a few chefs over the months and have found it hard to replace them.
He says restrictions on advertising such roles off Island have slowed the process.
He explained more to Chanelle Sukhoo:
The Department for Enterprise has been invited to respond to Mr Gibbs' concerns.
Tourists often rely on eateries when visiting the Island.
Ged Power is a tourism professional, and says certain times of the week can be very difficult for visitors.
He told Andy Wint he'd like to see more done to support careers in the hospitality sector:
The Isle of Man Government and University College Isle of Man have been contacted for comment.
UPDATE:
A spokesperson for UCM issued a statement to Manx Radio.
They said: "UCM continues to work closely with industry, sector representatives and the Department for Enterprise to ensure our curriculum meets the needs of the Island's economy. We have worked particularly closely with the hospitality sector to respond to workforce and skills needs.
"While apprenticeship numbers have remained steady, full-time enrolments in Hospitality have almost doubled over the last three years, reaching 45 students this academic year. We have also supported more students to enter at Level 2, while maintaining a Level 1 pathway for those who need it. As a result, more learners will progress to Level 3 next year and graduate with advanced skills that will benefit the industry.
"Alongside this, we have continued to invest in the student experience and learning environment, including refreshing our restaurant brand and upgrading kitchen facilities."
