Mec Vannin calls out DEFA over scallops delay

Changes to king scallop fishing delayed

The Island's nationalist party has criticised the decision to delay changes to king scallop fishing licences after concerns were raised by Scottish officials.

On Friday, the Department for Environment, Food and Agriculture announced the new measure, requiring all vessels to call at Manx ports, would be delayed a week to allow discussions to take place.

The rural economy secretary for the Scottish Government, Fergus Ewing, will speak to DEFA Minster Geoffrey Boot about the issue soon - Mr Ewing wants to avoid 'restrictive measures' if at all possible.

After supporting the new requirement, Mec Vannin has now accused the DEFA minister of backpedaling on the issue, saying the situation can now be read as 'plan abandoned'.
