Mec Vannin commemorates general strike

Caused postponement of Tynwald Day 100 years ago

A Manx nationalist party is set to mark the achievements of the working people involved in the Island's 1918 general strike.

Mec Vannin will be holding a series of events in remembrance of the industrial action - which caused the postponement of Tynwald Day almost a century ago.

Withdrawal of subsidies to the flour industry - resulting in rising bread prices - caused the strike to take place.

It eventually resulted in income tax and pensions being introduced for Manx workers for the first time.

Next year will be the 100th anniversary of the event.
