Minimum wage a 'difficult balancing act'

Skelly faces questions over pay for young adults

Determining minimum wage rates is a difficult balancing act - so says the Department of Economic Development Minister Lawrence Skelly.

During Tynwald this morning, David Ashford MHK quizzed the Minister over what evidence was used to decide a minimum wage of £7.50 for under 25s.

Mr Skelly says some younger workers do exactly the same job as colleagues, but in some cases, they have less experience, and require extra supervision and training.

In March Tynwald approved a new wage band, which will come into effect in June.

The DED Minister says the increased rates need to be introduced carefully and will be 'looked at'.
