Minister calls promenade scheme huge

Up to 50 workers will be involved

The Infrastructure Minister says the scale of the Douglas Promenade redevelopment is huge.

Ray Harmer calls it the most important capital project for some time.

Work on the £25 million scheme is set to start in September and expected to take up to three years to complete.

Up to 50 skilled construction workers will be involved on rejuvenating what is often termed "the gateway to the Isle of Man".

If all the aggregate, concrete, paving and tarmac that will be used was laid out it, would cover an area of more than 263 football pitches.

Most of the labour and equipment used will be supplied by the private sector.

The horse tram tracks will be replaced and improvements made to pavements, drainage, junctions and pedestrian crossings.

A traffic management plan is hoped to minimise disruption and keep two-way travel along the prom wherever possible.
