MNFU calls for next administration to tackle food security issues

General secretary says 'you cannot kick the can down the road any longer'

The Manx National Farmers' Union is calling on those standing in the upcoming General Election to address the Island's food security.

The organisation has set out its own manifesto ahead of next month's vote calling for funding to support farmers, improved access to markets and legislation to be aligned with the UK.

The union has previously voiced concern about the Island's reliance on imported food and the costs facing local producers.

In its manifesto the group says the farming and food sector has experienced accelerated decline over the last 15 years with reduced market opportunities, price pressures and changing policies.

It wants the next government to reverse that decline and recognise the benefits of a thriving agricultural sector.

General Secretary Sarah Comish told Manx Radio it's time to make progress:

In response, the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture confirmed there are plans to look into the issue over the summer ahead of the new administration coming in.

It said: "In light of recent developments in the Middle East and the potential implications the department has established a dedicated temporary team to focus specifically on food security matters.

"This team is monitoring developments, assessing potential risks to the Island’s food supply, engaging with key stakeholders across the supply chain and ensuring that appropriate contingency planning arrangements remain in place.

"The department continues to work within the framework of the Food Security Plan 2024. 

"As part of this work the department is using the summer period to review existing policies and develop a refreshed suite of measures, incentives and support mechanisms for consideration by the new administration.

"This work is intended to build upon existing foundations while ensuring that future policy remains responsive to changing economic, environmental and geopolitical circumstances.

"During the current administration the department has published both the Food Security Strategy and the Agricultural Strategy - setting out a clear direction for the future of the Island’s food and farming sectors.

"These strategies recognise the importance of maintaining a productive and resilient agricultural industry, supporting local producers, strengthening domestic supply chains and increasing the Island’s capacity to respond to external shocks.

"The department is now focused on delivering the objectives contained within those strategies, while also ensuring that a strong evidence base and a range of practical policy options are available to for the next administration.

"Food security is a complex and evolving issue that requires ongoing collaboration between government, industry and the wider community.

"The department remains committed to working closely with producers, processors, retailers and other stakeholders to enhance resilience, support local food production and safeguard the long-term security of the Island’s food supply."
